Meron Begashaw’s Ode

As Jesus Christ Himself said in Matthew 18:3, “truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven,” my mom was like a child, excited and thankful for every moment. She never took anything for granted, and was always amazed by God’s wonders. She was full of life and energy. She even lived her life working with children–giving them gifts for no reason, hugging and kissing them. Her soul magnified the Lord and her love for Him was in everything she said and did. Hulu neger Lersu nebere. She taught me to humble myself, to not see anyone as above or below myself but as equal under God. She was ye-Egziabher baria. As a mother, she was the greatest blessing I’ll ever know. She accepted all God gave her with grace, unbelievable strength and praise on her lips. I sorely miss my counselor, best friend, comedian, shopping partner, my pride and sunshine, my mama. Thank you for your hugs and kisses, your shining spirit and for teaching us “ye tibeb mejemerya” at a young age. I am intertwined with my mom and a part of me has gone with her but I will continue to use her spirit as a guiding light. I love her with everything I am… my cheerleader, my angel, my saint of a mother.
